Kiruna - Moving of cultural buildings

Large parts of Kiruna need to be relocated because the mining operations need the land. The unique relocation of the community is attracting attention, also beyond Sweden’s borders. Veidekke has been entrusted with relocating 12 of the important cultural buildings to be preserved for the future.

Collaboration contract

In total, Veidekke and its subsidiary Berggren & Bergman will help move 12 iconic wooden houses in a collaboration project with LKAB.

We are moving:

  • Gustaf Wickman's "Yellow Row" on Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen
  • Four 16-room workers’ homes on Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen and Gruvfogdegatan
  • The SJ building on Rälsgatan and Baningenjörsvägen 5 and 7 with associated complementing buildings
We have successfully involved all technical expertise to achieve good results together. It feels reassuring to work with a group that has good knowledge and understanding of what LKAB is attempting with the relocation of the community.

Long-term planning

It is a complicated and sensitive operation, which requires lengthy planning. The partnership for Kiruna’s community relocation started as early as 2017.

The first move, which included the culturally historically valuable “Yellow Row”, was successfully completed in October 2019. Now the houses have new tenants at a new address in new Kiruna.

Renewed trust

We at Veidekke have since been entrusted to also move five more cultural buildings in a second phase. The move itself is planned for autumn 2022.

The project will be carried out in collaboration between LKAB and Veidekke, Berggren and Bergman, as well as LTH Traktor and ER Bygg. The partnership means that the Developer and the Contractor jointly design, draw up documents and carry out the actual move in close cooperation.

Renovation and rehabilitation works and other construction will continue thereafter and will be completed in the autumn of 2024.

Significant cultural values

These are some of many wooden buildings in Kiruna with distinctive architectural features that will be relocated in the coming years. No less than 39 homes will be given new addresses by 2035.

In their place, so-called mining city parks will emerge to create pleasant environments during the transformation process.
