Major renovation and extension
Himmerfjärdsverket currently receives wastewater from 350,000 people in seven municipalities in the Stockholm region and is operated by Syvab.
In order to cope with the increasing burden of a growing population and tougher treatment requirements, the treatment plant must be renovated and expanded.

The renovation will lead to halving of discharges
Halved discharges
The name of the giant project is NKH - Nya Krav Himmerfjärdsverket. When the new plant is completed, discharges should be halved while serving even more households.
Complex project in collaboration
It is a complex project involving numerous specialists. Since the same amount of wastewater is constantly coming in from the connected households, the entire job must be carried out while the plant is operating. This places great demands on cooperation.
Renovations and extensions
In the first phase, system documents and calculation work for the new plant were completed. Veidekke was also responsible for specific technical consultation.
The second phase, with the production of the renovations and extensions, is currently in full swing with the casting of the concrete in the basin floor and walls.
The plan is for Nya Himmerfjärdsverket to be ready for commissioning in stages from the first quarter of 2024.
Both turnkey and execution contract
Veidekke’s responsibilities in the production phase include:
Extension, which is implemented as turnkey contract
- New strainer station
- Pump station
- Membrane building
- Associated technical facilities
Renovation of existing plant as execution contract
- Existing basins
- Outlet pipe
Innovative design
To meet the tougher treatment requirements, innovation has to be applied to both design and process. For example, a so-called MBR will be used, where MBR stands for Membrane BioReactor.
