As a result of the mining activities in the area, the city of Kiruna in Northern Sweden is on the move. By 2030, several thousand homes will be demolished, while buildings of historical and cultural significance will be relocated to Kiruna’s new city center. Preparations are currently ongoing for the relocation of some of Kiruna’s perhaps most iconic wooden houses. The first buildings out are Gustaf Wickman's ”Gula raden” in Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen 32–36 and four 16-room workmen’s dwellings in Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen 23–25 and Gruvfogdegatan 9–11.
The project is carried out in collaboration between LKAB, Berggren & Bergman, LTH Traktor and ER Bygg. In a collaboration project, client and contractor work closely together to project, produce documents and perform the relocation. The actual move is scheduled to take place in autumn 2019, after which building rehabilitation and conversion and other construction work will continue, and is planned for completion in autumn 2021.
”We appreciate being entrusted with this exciting assignment, which will comprise an important part of the new Kiruna that is currently under construction,” says Peter Johansson, construction manager in Berggren & Bergman.
”This project concerns some of Kiruna's most iconic old wooden houses, and we look forward to working on their relocation and preservation in collaboration with Berggren & Bergman,” says Mari Kuokkanen, project manager at LKAB.
Gula raden is one of many architecturally distinctive wooden buildings in Kiruna to be relocated in the upcoming years. The buildings are part of the second stage of cultural building relocations. By 2035, no less than 39 houses will have new addresses, and Gula raden and the 16-room workmen’s dwellings are the first to be moved.
